Space Maintainers

A space maintainer is a dental device that is used to maintain space in the child’s mouth for permanent teeth to grow in properly.

They are typically recommended when a primary tooth has been lost or removed prematurely, before the permanent tooth has erupted.

Without a space maintainer, nearby teeth can shift or tilt into the empty space, making it difficult for the permanent tooth to grow in properly, leading to crowding, misalignment or other dental problems.

There are two main types of space maintainers:

1. Removable space maintainers are custom-made devices that can be taken out and cleaned by the child and/or parent. They are typically made of acrylic and metal wire, and are held in place by the surrounding teeth.

2. Fixed space maintainers, also known as band and loop or lingual arch, are cemented in place by the dentist and cannot be removed by the child. They are typically used when multiple teeth are missing or when the child is not able to remove the removable space maintainer.

After thorough examination, Dr Riddhi and her team will determine if a space maintainer is necessary and recommend the appropriate type based on the specific needs of your child.

Space maintainers are typically worn until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, which can take several months to a few years, depending on the child’s age and the location of the missing tooth. On follow up visits, we will monitor the child’s progress and adjust or remove the space maintainer as needed.

It’s important to properly care for space maintainers by avoiding sticky or hard foods, brushing and flossing regularly, and attending regular dental check-ups. If a space maintainer becomes loose or damaged, it’s important that you contact us as soon as possible for repair or replacement.
