Dental Fillings for Children

Dental fillings for children's teeth are used to repair cavities caused by tooth decay. A filling is a
material that is placed in the cavity to restore the tooth's function and shape.

Baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, require fillings for several reasons.

1. One common reason is tooth decay. Just like permanent teeth, baby teeth can develop cavities if they are not properly cared for. If a cavity is not filled, the decay can continue to spread, causing pain and infection.

2. Another reason is to prevent further damage to the tooth. For example, if a baby tooth has been chipped or broken, a filling can help to protect the remaining tooth structure and prevent further damage.

3. Additionally, fillings in baby teeth can help to preserve the proper spacing and alignment of the permanent teeth. When a primary tooth is lost prematurely, the surrounding teeth can shift and cause problems with the eruption of the permanent teeth.

4. Baby teeth also need to be filled to reduce the bacterial load (germs) in the mouth that cause tooth decay. These bacteria multiply in open cavities, were food debris is hard to clean. Eventually, the decay continues on other teeth and even on the permanent teeth when they come into the mouth. Finally, fillings on baby teeth can also be used to treat tooth sensitivity caused by a deep cavity or exposed tooth root.

5. Lastly, it is important to note that baby teeth are temporary and will eventually be replaced by adult teeth. However, keeping baby teeth healthy is important for the proper development of adult teeth and for maintaining good oral health.

The most commonly used filling materials for children’s teeth are composite resin and glass ionomer. Both the materials are tooth coloured and BPA free.

Based on your child’s needs Dr Riddhi and her team will review all the possible options with you before the treatment begins. We firmly believe that a conservative approach is the best approach for children’s dentistry.

It is however, important to note that, regardless of the material used, dental fillings are not permanent and may need to be replaced over time. Regular dental checkups can help identify when a filling needs to be replaced.
